Tribute to Jackie the Eagle

Millions of people around the world watched Jackie through the eye of a digital lens, but a webcam can never capture the true weight of an ancient wilderness. It edits out the isolation of the San Bernardino peaks, the towering granite crags, and the vast expanse of national forest where ancient snags and giant, storm battered nests stand as monuments against time itself.

For over a decade, Jackie was a fierce, living symbol of all that is still wild, noble, and good in a world increasingly carved up by corporate sprawl and industrial greed. Through blinding snowstorms, howling gales, and the relentless pressure of a changing landscape, she anchored herself to the high branches, a sovereign of the deep woods holding the line against the encroaching concrete. The last of what is good. And what is real. That old nest is up there still, standing tall. A reminder that there are still places wild enough for eagles. Still enough room to fly free.

When the digital feed went dark, the real story didn’t end with a viral clip, but with the unscripted tragedy of the wild: territorial fighting, internal decline, and a quiet room far from the pines. Yet, her legacy transcends the screens that brought her to all of us, echoing across the ancient rhythms of the universe where apex predators fight simply to keep the old world alive.

Her journey concluded through a wild protocol, her remains returning to federally recognized tribes, completing a sacred circle that no corporation can ever buy, pave over, “brand”, sell out, or domesticate. She belonged to the timber, the crags, and the storm, and in the end, her spirit remains inextricably bound to the untamed earth. (image, article by @michaelhodgesauthor)

Jackie is a lesson for all of us. A lesson to focus on what you can touch, hear, and see, and forget the rest. Like your neighbor that may need a hand. Or that person who needs help crossing the street. Or a door held open for them at the grocery store. The next time you’re upset about some material item, think of Jackie, What would she do? What would she focus on?

She’d focus on what is real. What is true.

Because that’s what she was.
